In the first three months of 2021, the unemployment rate in India among those above the age of 15 was around 10 per cent, data from the periodic labour force survey by the National Statistical Office (NSO) showed.
According to the data released on Tuesday, the unemployment rate in India from January to March 2021 stood at 9.3 percent, a little higher than the 9.1 the same period the previous year.
The data also showed that more women had become unemployed than men.?
The unemployment rate among women rose to 11.8 per cent in January-March 2021 from 10.6 per cent a year ago. It was 13.1 per cent in October-December 2020.?
For men ( urban area) the unemployment rate was at 8.6 per cent in January-March 2021 compared to a year ago. It was 9.5 per cent in October-December 2020.
Joblessness or unemployment rate (UR) is defined as the percentage of unemployed persons in the labour force.
The UR for in CWS (current weekly status) in urban areas for people of age 15 years and above was 10.3 per cent in October-December 2020, the 10th Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) showed.
Labour force participation rate (percentage of persons in labour force in the population) in urban areas came down to 47.5% in the January-March quarter of 2021, compared to 48.1% in the same period a year ago.?
Women¡¯s participation in the labour force at 21.2% in the January-March quarter was lower than 21.9% in the same quarter previous year though it was better than 20.6% in the October-December 2020 quarter.?
The working population ratio, defined as the percentage of employed persons in the population, stood at 43.1% in January-March 2021, down from 43.7% a year ago.
Labour force refers to the part of the population which supplies or offers to supply labour for pursuing economic activities for the production of goods and services and therefore, includes both employed and unemployed persons.
NSO launched PLFS in April 2017. On the basis of PLFS, a quarterly bulletin is brought out giving estimates of labour force indicators namely UR, Worker Population Ratio (WPR), Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR), distribution of workers by broad status in employment and industry of work in Current Weekly Status (CWS).
The estimates of unemployed people in CWS give an average picture of unemployment in a short period of seven days during the survey period.
Meanwhile, monthly unemployment data released by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), joblessness in the country stood at 7.13% as of November 29.
The urban jobless rate rose to its 11-week high of 8.75% in the week ended November 28. The jobless rate in towns and cities was 8.14% in the previous week and 9.2% for the week ended September 12, the highest level in recent times.
