UP Woman Given Triple Talaq Because She Refused To Take A Chewing Gum From Husband

How much does a chewing gum cost? Marriage, apparently! That is what a woman in Uttar Pradesh found out in the hard way.?

The incident took place on Monday inside a court premises in Lucknow. The woman, identified as Simmi was in the court for the hearing of a dowry case she had filed against her in-laws. While Simmi was talking to her lawyer, her husband Syed Rashid offered her chewing gum, which she rejected. Rashid, in a fit of rage allegedly gave her triple talaq by uttering ‘talaq’ three times in the presence of the lawyer.

According to reports, the couple had been married since 2004 and Simmi had recently filed a case of dowry harassment against her in-laws.?

Indira Nagar Station House Officer (SHO), SB Pandey, said that said a case has been registered against Rashid under various sections of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019 and the matter is being investigated.

This is not the first time Muslim women have been given instant triple talaq by their husband for flimsy and even bizarre reasons.?

Last month a woman in Noida was given triple talaq by her husband in full public view after she asked for Rs 30 for buying vegetables.

In June a man from Uttar Pradesh's Etah district gave triple talaq to his wife over the phone after she was late by 10 minutes to reach home.?

Last year there was a case in Gujarat where a man gave triple talaq to his wife because she was "too fat".?

There was also a case from Mahoba district in UP last year where the husband gave triple talaq to his wife for serving him burnt roti.?

Several cases of triple talaq over WhatsApp, phone, and SMS have also been reported over the years

Supports of the Triple Talaq law had argued that the new law is aimed to protect Muslim women from such atrocious actions where the husband can give instant divorce at will and move on while the woman is left to suffer for the rest of her life without any proper support.
