The US Presidential Election is a little over three months away, and as the battle heats up, it is also being felt in India. For the residents of two Indian villages, the election is a matter of prestige as it will decide the fate of one of their own!
For the residents of Thulasendrapuram, a village in Tamil Nadu, the presumptive nominee of the Democratic Party, incumbent US Vice President Kamala Harris, is no less than 'namma veettu ponnu' (girl from our house).

Thulasendrapuram, located in Tiruvarur district, is the ancestral village of Harris. Though her maternal grandfather PV Gopalan left the village decades ago, residents of Thulasendrapuram say the family has maintained close links and has regularly donated to the village temple's upkeep.
The Shri Dharmasastha Temple in Thulasendrapuram has a unique wall where the names of people who have made contributions to the temple are etched in Tamil, and Harris is one of them. As Harris gets one step closer to claiming the most powerful office in the world, Thulasendrapuram is jubilant.
Villagers said they are proud of Harris and they are praying for her in the US Presidential elections. "We are so happy that she is being nominated. And we support Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. We wish her all the very best and good luck to her. We wish her victory," a woman said.
Similar scenes are also being played out at Vadluru, a village in Andhra Pradesh, some 900 kms away from Thulasendrapuram. But they are praying for a different person.
Vadluru, located in Godavari district, is the ancestral home of Usha Chilukuri Vance, the wife of Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump's running mate, JD Vance. If Trump wins the US Presidential election, Vance will become the US Vice President and Usha will be the US Second Lady.
