More than 3.5 Lakh cases of crimes against women were registered across the country in 2017, continuing with the upward trend for the third consecutive year, said the latest data by National Crime Records Bureau.
In 2015, over 3.2 lakh cases of crimes against women were registered and 3,38,954 cases were registered in 2016.
¡°Majority of cases under crimes against women were registered under ¡®Cruelty by Husband or his Relatives¡¯ (27.9 per cent) followed by ¡®Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty¡¯ (21.7 per cent), ¡®Kidnapping & Abduction of Women¡¯ (20.5 per cent) and ¡®Rape¡¯ (7.0 per cent),¡± the report said.
The data was released after a delay of more than a year, raising several questions from various quarters siting that the delay in the publication of these reports defeats the purpose of compiling them.
Uttar Pradesh topped the list with 56,011 cases followed by Maharashtra with 31,979 cases and West Bengal 30,002.

The data showed there had been a 3.7 per cent rise in registration of cases as opposed to those booked in 2016 with the number of rape cases reportedly lowest since 2013.
Uttar Pradesh registered the highest number of crimes against women (56,011) contributing to 15.6 per cent of total crimes against women in India. The number was 49,262 in 2016.
Lucknow emerged as the most unsafe city for women. For every one lakh women, 178 of them were on the receiving end of crimes in the city in 2017.
In rate of crimes, Delhi followed at a close after Lucknow. The number of crimes in the national capital was a whopping 11,542.?
Interestingly, crimes against women in Delhi decreased in 2017 compared to previous year but they still remain highest among metros such as Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru.

As per the data, Delhi reported 11,542 cases of crime against women in 2017.
The number of the same category of crimes was 13,803 in 2016 and 14,766 in 2015.
According to the latest statistics, Mumbai reported 5,453 similar cases, Bengaluru 3,565 cases while Kolkata had 1,975 cases in 2017. The report shows that in all three cities, the crime against women cases had increased since 2015.
