Abandoned After 1962 War, Uttarakhand's Jadung Village On Tibet Border Set To Welcome Tourists
An Indian border village that has been uninhabited for more than half a century is all set for a revival. Jadung village in Uttarakhand near the Tibetan border was abandoned in 1962 after its residents were evacuated following the India-China war.
What happened to?Jadung Village
Jadung village in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand had around 56 families living there at the time and they were rehabilitated in Harshil Valley.
The scenic village, located at an altitude of 3,800 metres above sea level has since remained a ghost hamlet, except for the Indian Army and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) camps there.
Jadung Village set to welcome tourists
This is all set to change and Jadung is all set to welcome its original residents back, and some tourists.
The Uttarakhand government has cleared a proposal to redevelop Jadung under the Vibrant Village Programme.
The Uttarakhand government led by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has decided to resettle the villagers, who still own the land in Jadung.
Homestays in?Jadung Village
Apart from this, Jadung, also known as Ą°Leh and LadakhĄą of Uttarakhand will also be developed as a tourist destination. Currently, there are just six dilapidated houses left in Jadung and they will be redeveloped as homestays.
These homestays will be developed by the Tourism Department and operated by the original inhabitants.
According to Tourism Secretary Sachin Kurve, the houses will be refurbished based on local architectural styles using locally sourced materials.
The Tourism Department will also support the locals by training them to manage the homestays and promote Jadung among tourists.
Jadung Village as tourist destination?
In April 2023, the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board had announced a plan to develop Jadung as a tourism destination.
