Water Tankers Bringing In 1.5 Lakh Litres Of Water For Animals In Corbett National Park

Soaring temperatures are taking a toll on Corbett National Park. With natural water sources inside the park practically drying up due to the heat, officials have had to arrange for water tanks to ensure that the animals' drinking water requirements are adequately met.

According to estimates, almost 1.5 lakh litres of water is being procured every day to fill up over 100 water holes inside the park.

Park director Sameer Sinha told TOI "Although procuring water from outside has been a regular practice more or less in every summer, but this year, the dry spell was too long. Hence, our requirement is huge and we have had to get additional water for the animals"?

The exercise started in April with the onset of summer but as temperatures have risen, the quantum of water being purchased has also gone up. According to park officials, every day, 35-40 tankers arrive at the park, each carrying almost 4,000 litres of water. The water is then filled in the water holes either manually or with the help of pump sets.

Saket Badola, deputy director of the park said?"This is a serious issue. The soaring temperatures have resulted in such a situation where we have had to increasingly depend on supplied water to meet the requirements of the animals"

Corbett is known for its varied wildlife which includes the Royal Bengal tiger, elephants as well as a variety of bird species spread across the park's five zones which are open for tourists -- Jhirna, Bijrani, Dhikala, Dhela and Durgadevi. Wildlife experts had been pointing out consistently that scarcity of food and water inside the park -- which sees an average 700-1000 tourists per day during the peak tourist season -- is a matter of grave concern that needs to be addressed on priority.
