The West Bengal Tourism Board has introduced new coaches to existing trains along with three new trains in the toy train circuit.

“With the introduction of three pairs of trains to be operational from September 10, there will be nine pairs of toy trains plying on the 6 KM distance between Ghum and Darjeeling. All the three new trains will be hauled by steam locomotives which have a high heritage appeal among tourists,” said Pranav Jyoti Sharma, chief public relations officer of the Northern Frontier Railways.

Not only does this initiative help in taking the onus away from Kolkata during the upcoming festive season, it also helps in promoting "slow tourism". In a fast-paced, noisy world, toy trains offer a perfect laid-back experience.

Over two hundred thousand tourists visit the hills between September to December and the ‘toy train’ is one of the primary attractions and many believe it can play a significant role in helping the tourist-centric economy of the place.

You can also retrace the steps of Mother Teresa who had undertaken the toy train journey in 1946 during which she felt the higher calling to serve people the way she did.
