Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi faced restrictions while attempting to visit Assam's Batadrava Than, the birthplace of saint Srimanta Sankardeva. The incident occurred after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma suggested that Gandhi visit the place post the Ram Temple consecration ceremony to avoid "unnecessary competition."
Gandhi, currently on the Assam leg of his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, expressed disappointment, stating authorities provided no reasons for the restriction despite an invitation. In a video, Gandhi questioned the imposed restrictions, emphasizing the peaceful intent of the visit.
"We are trying to go to the temple. We were invited and now they are telling us that we can't visit. We are not going to do anything forcibly. We have to do our yatra, we are asking them what is the reason? We are not going to disturb anybody. We have been invited there," he said.
Gandhi reiterated their desire to visit the temple and questioned the imposed restrictions, asking, "What crime have I committed that I cannot visit the temple?" He emphasised the intent to pray peacefully and criticized the authorities for hindering the visit.
Gandhi further stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would decide who could visit the temple, emphasizing the need for transparency in access.?"Only one person can enter the temple," he said.
In response to the incident, Congress leaders and Gandhi initiated a sit-in protest in Nagaon, underscoring their disagreement with the imposed restrictions.
Chief Minister Sarma had earlier stressed the importance of avoiding unnecessary competition between the consecration ceremony of the Ram temple and the visit to the birthplace of Srimanta Sankardeva at Batadrava. Sarma urged Gandhi to reconsider plans, expressing concerns that conflicting events could negatively impact Assam's image.
"I urge Rahul Gandhi to not create a notion that there is a competition between Ram Temple and Batadrava Satra because the TV channels will be flashing Ram Temple Pran Pratishtha ceremony on one side and him visiting Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva's birthplace on the other side. This won't be good for Assam," stated Chief Minister Sarma.
The situation highlights the intersection of political, religious, and cultural events, with Gandhi's visit becoming entangled with the Ram Temple consecration ceremony.
