Samoa's Darius Visser made history on Tuesday in a spectacular fashion during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup East Asia-Pacific Region Qualifier A. In an extraordinary display of power hitting, Visser shattered Yuvraj Singh's record for the most runs scored in a single over in men's T20 Internationals. He amassed 39 runs in an over against Vanuatu, outdoing Singh's previous record.
During the 16th over of the match, Visser unleashed a barrage of sixes against Vanuatu's Nalin Nipiko. He started the over with three consecutive sixes. Nipiko then bowled a no-ball, which Visser dispatched for another six. A dot ball followed, but Nipiko's repeated no-ball deliveries provided Visser more opportunities. He capitalised on these, hitting two more sixes and finishing the over with a final maximum.
Visser's innings comprised 14 sixes and five fours, all in a 62-ball knock of 132 runs. This performance made him the first Samoan to achieve a T20I century. In contrast, most of his teammates struggled, with only skipper Caleb Jasmat reaching 16 runs from 21 balls. Samoa ended their innings at 174 runs from 20 overs.
In response, Vanuatu's opener Nipiko scored 73 runs from 52 balls. Despite valuable contributions from skipper Joshua Rasu and Tim Cutler, Vanuatu could only manage 164/9, falling short by 10 runs. Samoa, currently ranked 77th in the ICC T20I rankings, secured the win. Notably, this was Visser's third T20I appearance.
Before Visser, the record for most runs in an over in T20Is was held by former West Indies captain Kieron Pollard and Nepal's Dipendra Singh Airee, both of whom had scored six sixes in an over. Other instances of 36 runs being scored in an over include Rohit Sharma and Rinku Singh against Afghanistan's Karim Janat, and Afghanistan's Azmatullah Omarzai against Nicholas Pooran in the T20 World Cup 2024.
