Gautam Gambhir is all set to take command as head coach of Team India from Rahul Dravid following India¡¯s thrilling victory in the T20 World Cup 2024.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah recently made this official announcement on X, formerly known as Twitter. Gambhir¡¯s first outing with the team is reportedly expected to be a white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, comprising of three ODIs and three T20Is later this month.
After officially assuming the role on Tuesday, the two-time World Cup champion expressed his excitement over this development on social media.
Gambhir's post on X read, ¡°India is my identity and serving my country has been the greatest privilege of my life. I¡¯m honoured to be back, albeit wearing a different hat. But my goal is the same as it has always been, to make every Indian proud. The men in blue shoulder the dreams of 1.4 billion Indians and I will do everything in my power to make these dreams come true!¡±
The update of Gambhir's appointment quickly spread across social media, starting a meme-fest, wherein the new coach was portrayed as several iconic Bollywood characters, from Sunny Deol in ¡®Border¡¯ to SRK in ¡®Chak De! India.¡¯
According to Cricbuzz, Gautam Gambhir is looking forward to working with VVS Laxman, who is currently serving as the interim coach on India's T20I tour in Zimbabwe. Following the Zimbabwe tour, India will play three T20Is and three ODIs against Sri Lanka, making it Gambhir¡¯s first assignment as head coach.

Gambhir's support staff will reportedly include coaching staff popular at different levels including at least one member of Dravid¡¯s outgoing staff and Abhishek Nayar from the Kolkata Knight Riders' coaching unit.

Following Rohit Sharma's call to relinquish T20I captaincy after a successful ICC T20 World Cup campaign, all-rounder Hardik Pandya is expected to take over as captain of the Indian team in the shortest format, as per an ANI report. Concurrently, media reports are suggesting that wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul is set to wear the captain's hat in ODI matches.
