Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan have opted out of playing in the Ranji Trophy. Kishan aims to improve his skills for IPL 2024, while Iyer is dealing with a minor back issue. However, the BCCI may not approve of their decision and could leave them out of the new contracts list.
According to a report in the Times of India, it is likely that neither Iyer nor Kishan will be included in the list of centrally contracted players for the 2023-24 season. This decision has been made due to their failure to participate in domestic cricket, despite the board's instructions.
The selectors, led by Ajit Agarkar, have nearly finalised the list of centrally contracted players for the upcoming season, which the BCCI will announce shortly.
"Kishan and Iyer are likely to be excluded from that list, as both haven't been playing domestic cricket despite the BCCI's instructions," a source informed the paper.
In the previous round of central contracts, Ishan Kishan was placed in category C and earned Rs 1 crore, while Shreyas Iyer was placed in category B and earned Rs 3 crore.
Kishan last played cricket in the India tour of South Africa in December and January. He has been training with his Mumbai Indians captain, Hardik Pandya, in Baroda but has not joined Jharkhand in the Ranji Trophy.
Iyer was absent from Mumbai's last Ranji Trophy match against Assam at BKC and will also skip the quarter-final against Baroda starting Friday.
He informed the Mumbai Cricket Association that he had back spasms, but Nitin Patel, head of sports science and medicine at the National Cricket Academy, emailed BCCI and selectors stating Iyer was 'fit'.
However, a source close to Iyer revealed that he was excluded from India's squad for the last three Tests as a precautionary measure following his complaints of a back problem.
"Patel's email was after the second Test against England. Iyer has been troubled by a back problem since then," the source said. "He was one of India's top batsmen in the ODI World Cup last year. He won't lose his contract just because he missed a few Ranji matches," he insisted.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah cautioned centrally contracted and India A players last week that missing Ranji Trophy matches won't be tolerated, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar would have a "free hand in this matter".
