Mumbai Indians (MI) star batter and former Indian Premier League (IPL) skipper Rohit Sharma is set to mark a significant milestone as he gears up to play his 200th match for his franchise on Wednesday. The occasion will see him lead MI against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
Both SRH and MI will clash in their IPL 2024 encounter in Hyderabad, following narrow losses of four runs and six runs, respectively, in their opening matches against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Gujarat Titans (GT).
Rohit Sharma has been a standout performer for the Mumbai Indians since he joined the franchise in 2011. Having played 199 IPL matches for MI so far, he has amassed 5,084 runs at an average of 29.39 and a strike rate of 129.86. In his tenure with MI, Rohit has notched up one century and 34 fifties in 195 innings, boasting a highest score of 109*.
Taking over the captaincy reins from Ricky Ponting in 2013, Rohit led MI to remarkable success, guiding them to five IPL titles in 10 years (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020), with two playoff appearances. Last year, he passed on the captaincy to Hardik Pandya after a successful stint, which saw him rise to prominence following two stellar seasons with the Gujarat Titans.
Rohit Sharma's illustrious career with MI also includes two Champions League T20 titles in 2011 and 2013, the latter under his captaincy. He stands as MI's all-time highest run-scorer, tallying 5,357 runs in 208 matches and 204 innings at an average of 29.59 and a strike rate approaching 130, with one century and 35 fifties.
Before his tenure with MI, Rohit represented the now-defunct Deccan Chargers from 2008 to 2010, playing 45 matches and scoring 1,170 runs at an average of 30.79 and a strike rate of over 131. He played a pivotal role in winning the IPL title in 2009, adding to his list of accolades.
With 6,254 runs in 244 IPL matches, Rohit Sharma stands as the fourth-highest run-getter in IPL history, boasting an average of 29.63 and a strike rate of 130.15. His impressive record includes one century and 42 fifties in 239 innings, with a highest score of 109*.
Rohit's influence extends beyond his performance on the field, as he has played a key role in shaping the careers of future Indian stars such as Ishan Kishan, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal, Hardik Pandya, Tilak Varma, Ambati Rayadu, among others.
Rohit Sharma's journey to his 200th IPL match is a testament to his enduring legacy in the league and his invaluable contributions to the Mumbai Indians franchise.
