It is a well-known fact that MS Dhoni was handed the captaincy of the Indian cricket team in 2007 on the recommendation of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar.
Tendulkar's crucial suggestion was based on his belief in Dhoni's remarkable qualities, which the Team India icon had observed during their interactions on the field.??
Now, in a viral video that has resurfaced online, Tendulkar can be seen sharing compelling reasons behind his decision to refuse the captaincy of the Indian cricket team in 2007, a role that was subsequently handed to Dhoni.
Tendulkar's health led to his decision to turn down captaincy, which was a cornerstone in shaping Dhoni's legacy.
In the viral video, Tendulkar recounts when he turned down the captaincy, suggesting Dhoni's name instead.??
Elaborating on his chat with Sharad Pawar, a revered figure in Indian cricket administration, Tendulkar recalls, "The real reason for turning down captaincy was that my body was giving me a lot of trouble and I remember having that meeting with Mr Pawar (Sharad) in England, it was before The Oval match and he said 'according to me you should take the leadership role'. I said sir my leadership role as a player will always be there, only the captain tag won't be there in front of me but whatever in my capacity till I hang up my boots, I will always give my 100% for the country."
Tendulkar's suggestion to consider Dhoni for the captaincy was based on his observations of Dhoni's calm demeanour and sharp cricketing intellect. "I'm going to suggest you a name who I feel has a good cricketing brain. Because I used to interact quite a bit with MS Dhoni, I would field in the slips and that's how this happened and the rest is history," he added.
