The journey of Romal Wahizada, the recently commissioned officer into the Afghan National Army has been a tale of tragedy and edifice of success. At 16, Romal Wahizada saw the horror of terror when Taliban insurgent beheaded over a dozen people in Jalalabad, including his close relatives. Now he is set to become an officer in? Afghan National Army after being trained at Indian Defence Academy (IMA) Dehradun.
¡°The attack was a show of strength by the militants,¡± recalls Wahizada, who still gets goosebumps while narrating the incident. ¡°I was shaken and didn¡¯t talk to anyone for a long time. On seeing the blood of innocents being shed, I pledged to join the defence forces.¡±
But this tragedy changed Romal¡¯s life. Being the only son to his parents and hailing from a lower-middle-class family in a conflict marred country, Wahizada ¡¯s decision to join the Army was rejected by the family. However, he was determined.?
¡°The cries of women and children still ring in my ears. That is what gives me the courage to fight the battle against the Taliban. I wish more people like me would come forward to join the Afghan army so that the militants can be wiped out,¡± he said.
