Canada To End Unlimited Working Hours Rule For International Students: Here's All About It

For those of a certain age residing in urban areas in India, it's likely that they know individuals, or perhaps a substantial number of them, who are pursuing overseas studies. Both before and after the pandemic, a significant portion of the younger population ventured to countries such as the US, the UK, and Canada for educational purposes.

What happened?

In November last year, Canada introduced a new regulation granting international students in the country exemption from the 20-hour work limit. It essentially meant that students who had applied for a study permit could work off-campus for unlimited hours. However, this regulation is approaching its end.

Where and when?

Across Canada, the rule would only apply until December 31, 2023.

Why?

The Canadian government hasn't yet specified why the rule is coming to an end.

How did it work?

Following are the conditions for those who applied for a study permit on or before October 7, 2022:

• You hold a study permit.
• Your study permit has expired, but you're still studying at a DLI or Designation Learning Institution.
• Your study permit has been approved, but you haven't arrived in Canada yet.
• Either of the following conditions are printed on your permit:

1. You may work 20 hours per week off campus.
2. You may accept employment on or off campus if you meet eligibility requirements.

Following are the conditions for those who applied for a study permit after October 7, 2022:

• You're applying for an extension of your original study permit, which expires between November 15, 2022, and December 31, 2023. In this case, you can work for more than 20 hours off campus. However, once your original permit expires, you must stop this.
• Your application for the original study permit reached them on or before October 7, 2022.
• You're a study permit holder who is studying full-time at a DLI.

Only if you met these conditions would you be permitted to work unlimited hours in Canada. This rule, sadly, though, is nearing its end. Many students work multiple jobs while they're studying to support themselves and their dependents, if any.?

Who needs to be careful?

Students and their employers must ensure that they can work off campus without a work permit before they start working. If students start working off campus but don't meet the conditions and eligibility requirements, they may have to leave Canada.
