If you are on Twitter, it is highly likely that in the past two years, you have come across at least one tweet by Dr. Faheem Younus about COVID-19.
That is because, right from the start of the pandemic, Dr. Younus has been one of the most influential medical voices on Twitter, from giving advice to busting myths and fake news around COVID-19.
Younus, the Chief of Infectious Diseases at the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health (UM UCH) in the US has also been at the forefront of asking people to mask up and get vaccinated to be safe from COVID-19.
Now Dr. Younus has revealed that the Omicron variant which is spreading like wildfire has finally got him.
In a series of Tweets, Dr. Younus talked about his experience.
According to him, despite being with thousands of COVID-19 patients for two years, he was not infected as he was wearing face masks always.
"I have been around COVID patients over 1000 times in ~2 years and didn¡¯t get infected due to masks/PPE But was exposed for 2-days at a maskless family gathering and COVID got me So yes. Masks work. Wear an N95 or KN95 if you can," he said in a Tweet.
According to Dr Younus, he had already taken three doses of the COVID-19 vaccine including the booster dose, which helped him recover in just five days.
Younus also said that practice what you preach. "I didn't need monoclonal antibodies, steroids, antibiotics or paxlovid etc. Symptomatic therapy (that I've shared many times before) was enough. Definitely didn't use ivermectin, HCQ, zinc. Protocols for severe disease are different," he said."
COVID or no COVID, think of your own mortality, often. It (mortality) puts everything in perspective and allows us to make brave, meaningful decisions. Herd immunity is good; herd mentality is bad," he said further.
He also said that people should know their risk tolerance.
"Get boosted, wear a KN/N95 mask. If COVID still gets you, you¡¯ll likely fully recover That family gathering was important for me. But your risk tolerance could be different Comply with science, then follow your heart," he said.
Incidentally, just a few days ago, Dr. Younus had put out a tweet saying "Retweet if you know someone who has NOT gotten COVID so far Tell the world that prevention is possible."
