Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday announced that his country would respond with retaliatory tariffs on the US if it goes ahead with the 25 per cent tariffs on all Canadian goods announced by President Donald Trump. Calling the 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods unjustified, Trudeau said the counter-tariffs would remain in place as long as US measures are in place.
¡°Our tariffs will remain in place until the US trade action is withdrawn, and should US tariffs not cease, we are in active and ongoing discussions with provinces and territories to pursue several non-tariff measures,¡± Trudeau said.
Trudeau was responding to US President Donald Trump, who confirmed that his administration will go ahead with levies against Canada and Mexico on Tuesday.
¡°Tomorrow, tariffs ¡ª 25% on Canada and 25% on Mexico,¡± Trump said during a press conference at the White House. ¡°And that¡¯ll start. ¡ What they have to do is build their car plants, frankly, and other things in the United States, in which case they have no tariffs.¡±
Trump had announced a 25 per cent tariff on all goods coming to the US from Mexico and Canada, the country's two largest trade partners and neighbours, just days after assuming office. Canada is the largest single buyer of US goods, and vice versa.
However, on 3 February, just hours before the tariffs were to go into effect, Trump paused them, claiming that he had reached deals with Canada and Mexico where the leaders of the two countries had agreed to increase the security presence at their borders to prevent the trafficking of drugs into the US.
Unlike in the past, where Trump got his way from countries with the threat of tariffs, in 2025 both Canada and Mexico stood their ground and announced counter-measures.
