Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has alleged that the online free encyclopedia, Wikipedia, is "controlled by far-left activists." The world's richest man also urged people to stop donating to Wikipedia.
Musk was responding to a report by the US-based website Pirate Wires that alleged "Wikipedia¡¯s pro-Hamas editors hijacked the Israel-Palestine narrative." According to Pirate Wires, there was a coordinated campaign led by around 40 Wikipedia editors to delegitimise Israel and present radical Islamist groups in a favourable light after the October 7 attack.
Musk also tagged Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia, in a reply post that also linked an article claiming David Gerard, an admin of the online encyclopedia, has made dozens of daily edits aimed at slashing and burning lines referencing sources deemed unreliable by Wikipedia.
Responding to Musk, many agreed with him and argued that Wikipedia has become unreliable and has shifted to being far-left. Others, however, pointed out that X, the social media platform owned by Musk, is controlled by far-right activists.
"Elon Musk is the owner of SpaceX, Tesla, etc. - he is aligned with far-right wing movements that support Donald Trump (such as Nazis, Fascists, White Supremacists, and Nationalists). People should stop supporting him, and his government contracts should be forfeit," online hacktivist group Anonymous said while responding to Musk.
It should be noted that Musk, who has shifted from being a politically moderate liberal to right-wing, has used his X account to spread several unfounded far-right conspiracy theories, including those about voter fraud, communal riots in the UK, and Haitian immigrants eating cats. Musk is also one of the most high-profile supporters of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.
