The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) has claimed that a Bangladeshi lawyer who was scheduled to represent arrested Hindu priest Chinmoy Krishna Das has been attacked, leaving him injured. According to ISKCON, Ramen Roy, who was defending Chinmoy Krishna Das, was attacked at his home, resulting in his hospitalisation.
ISKCON further alleged that following the attack on Roy, other lawyers are refusing to appear for him in court. The bail plea filed by Das, who is facing sedition charges, was scheduled to come up for hearing on Tuesday in a Bangladeshi court.
But due to no lawyers coming forward to represent Das, the bail plea has been deferred by the court in Chattogram. According to local media reports, the next hearing in Das's bail plea has been scheduled for January 2, 2025.
"No new lawyer has come up to fight his case till now. Those who want to fight the case are afraid that they might face the same consequences as Ramen Roy. We would request the Bangladesh government to provide the lawyers who are willing to fight the case with adequate safety and security," ISKCON Kolkata spokesperson Radharamn Das said.
Chinmoy Krishna Das, who is facing charges of sedition for hoisting a saffron flag above the Bangladeshi national flag during a rally on October 25, was arrested at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on November 27.
Eighteen others also face similar charges for their role in the protest by Hindu groups at Chattogram's Laldighi Maidan last month.?
Bangladesh has been under the grip of communal tensions since the protests that led to the ouster of then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India. Homes, businesses, and places of worship of Hindus in Bangladesh also came under attack by radical mobs following the anarchy that has spread across the country.
