A cabin crew member of Pakistan's state carrier Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has reportedly gone missing in Canada where she had flawn for work.
The air hostess, identified as Maryam Raza, was a crew member of PIA flight PK-782 from Islamabad to Toronto, Canada on Monday.
But on Tuesday, Raza who has been working with PIA for 15 years failed to report for duty.
When the authorities started searching for and opened her hotel room, they found her uniform with a note reading ¡®Thank you, PIA¡¯.
It is believed that the woman had fled the hotel with the intention to seek asylum in Canada.
A report by Pakistani Newspaper Dawn noted that this was not an isolated case.
In fact, Raza was the second PIA crew member to go missing in Canada this year.
In January this year, a similar incident was reported when an air hostess failed to report for the return flight after arriving in Canada.
In 2023, PIA 'lost' at least seven cabin crew members in Canada while performing flight duties.
A PIA spokesman told Dawan that a former crew member who disappeared in Canada while on duty some years ago has now settled in the country and is advising others on seeking asylum.
Over the years, Canada has become one of the most sought-after countries in the world for those seeking asylum after fleeing their home.
The PIA, which traces its roots back to Orient Airways that was registered in Kolkata in 1946 became Pakistan's national carrier in 1953.
Today the PIA has a fleet of 31 aircraft and flies to 27 locations around the world.
In recent years, PIA was forced to cut down on its operations due to financial crisis, that has nearly crippled the airline. A 2020 report found that 1 in 3 PIA pilots have fake licenses and are not qualified to fly.
Following this, PIA was banned from flying to European Airspace, the UK, and the US.
