Want to get away to somewhere far from everyone around you? Point Nemo in the Pacific Ocean is the best place to do it. That is because Point Nemo is located in the middle of an ocean and is the farthest place from land on planet Earth.
Point Nemo is 2,688 km away from the Pitcairn Islands, Moto Nui in the Easter Islands, and Maher Island in Antarctica, its 'closest' land masses. The name means 'no one' in Latin and is named after Captain Nemo from Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.
It should be noted that Point Nemo, which is a location in the South Pacific Ocean between New Zealand and Chile, is not an island or any landmass, but a part of the ocean. Point Nemo, which is also referred to as the oceanic pole of inaccessibility, was discovered by Hrvoje Lukatela, a Croatian-Canadian survey engineer, in 1992, using a geo-spatial computer programme.

A pole of inaccessibility refers to a place on Earth that is the most inaccessible to reach according to set criteria. On land, it often refers to the point that is farthest from the coastline.
According to some reports, due to its remoteness, Point Nemo has become a cemetery of sorts for space junk. Over 100 decommissioned spacecraft are thought to lie in the area.

In March 2024, British explorer Chris Brown made history by becoming the first person to reach Point Nemo. The 61-year-old tech entrepreneur hailing from Yorkshire set sail along with his son on March 12 and reached Point Nemo on March 20. Brown's journey to Point Nemo is part of his ambition to visit all eight of the Earth's poles of inaccessibility, which he started in 2019.
