The sinking of a luxury yacht that killed British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and six others off the coast of Sicily in Italy was the result of a series of "indescribable, unreasonable errors" by the crew, the CEO of the yacht manufacturer has claimed. According to Giovanni Costantino, the CEO of The Italian Sea Group, the boat went down because it took on water.
"The boat suffered a series of indescribable, unreasonable errors, the impossible happened on that boat... but it went down because it took on water. From where, the investigators will tell," Costantino told Reuters.
The ill-fated yacht, Bayesian, was built in 2008 by Perini Navi, which is a part of The Italian Sea Group. Costantino noted that Bayesian did not have any?design or construction errors, as it had a history of trouble-free navigation for 16 years.
According to him, Bayesian's crew made the "incredible mistake" of not being prepared for the storm, which had been announced in shipping forecasts. "This is the mistake that cries out for vengeance," he said.
The yacht carrying Lynch, his family, and friends sank on Monday after it was struck by a waterspout ¡ª akin to a mini-tornado ¡ª during a storm.?
Lynch had planned the trip on the 56-metre-long British-flagged luxury yacht to celebrate his recent acquittal in a massive US fraud case. Fifteen people were rescued, but one body, believed to be that of the yacht's chef, was found a few hours later.
Six people, including Lynch and his daughter, were missing, and his body was found on Thursday. According to the search team, only one body, that of Lynch's daughter, is yet to be found.
