A new study has revealed that there's an average of 20 gallons (76 litres!) of pee to be found in a swimming pool. Published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, the study has found enough urine to fill a medium-sized garbage bin. Ew!

To determine the urine content in swimming pools, scientists from the University of Alberta used a common artificial sweetener used in processed foods, known as acesulfame potassium-K or ACE. They sampled 29 pools and hot tubs in two Canadian cities for their research.
The logic is simple.?If the water contains higher levels of sweetener, it most definitely contains a bigger concentration of urine in it.?

Scientists have, however, urged people to continue swimming and not be afraid of it. Disinfection obviously works but they also believe that public swimming hygiene must be maintained.?
