Alexei Navalny
Russian opposition leader and one of the biggest critics of Vladimir Putin, Alexei Navalny, passed away in February 2024. Navalny's death was announced by Russia on February 16, though he had been 'missing' from a Russian prison since December 2023. Typical of Putin's critics, the reason behind Navalny's death has remained shrouded in mystery, though it is widely believed that he was poisoned.
Ebrahim Raisi
One of the most consequential world leaders to die in 2024 was former Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, who lost his life in a helicopter crash in May. Raisi was the president of Iran from August 2021 and ruled over the Islamic Republic during some of its most tumultuous times in recent memory, including the public uprising over the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who was arrested by Iran's religious police for not wearing a hijab.
John Prescott
John Prescott, who served as the Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1997 to 2007, died on November 20, 2024. A former trade union activist and ex-merchant seaman, Prescott was credited with reviving the Labour Party's fortunes and paving the way for Tony Blair's landslide victory in 1997 after being in opposition for 18 years.
Sebasti¨¢n Pi?era
Sebasti¨¢n Pi?era, who served as a two-time president of Chile from 2010 to 2014 and from 2018 to 2022, died on 6 February 2024. The 76-year-old billionaire businessman died in a helicopter accident while on vacation in southern Chile.
Alberto Fujimori
Alberto Fujimori, who served as the 54th president of Peru from 1990 to 2000, died on 11 September 2024. The 86-year-old, a highly polarising figure in Peru who was of Japanese descent, died after a long battle with cancer.
Sartaj Aziz
Sartaj Aziz, who served key roles in successive Pakistani administrations, passed away on 2 January 2024. The 94-year-old economist had served as the deputy chairman of the Planning Commission of Pakistan, the Foreign Minister of Pakistan, and the National Security Advisor.?
He was one of the first and most prominent Pakistani politicians to admit that his country was hosting some Afghan Taliban leaders, a charge Islamabad had publicly denied for a very long time.
