2024 was an eventful year for India, with the Lok Sabha elections and assembly elections in many states. In 2024, India also lost many senior political leaders. Here are some of them.
Arguably the most shocking was the death of Baba Siddique, the four-time Congress MLA from Maharashtra, who later joined the NCP. Siddique died on 12 October 2024 in Mumbai when he was shot at by gunmen hired by the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
One of the tallest leaders of the Communist Party in India, Sitaram Yechury, passed away on 12 September 2024 at the age of 72. He was a Rajya Sabha MP from West Bengal from 2005 to 2017. He was also the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and a member of the Politburo of the party since 1992.
Former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi passed away on 13 May 2024. The 72-year-old senior BJP leader, who served as the deputy chief minister of Bihar from 2005 to 2013 and again between 2017 and 2020, passed away a month after he was diagnosed with cancer.
Senior Congress leader Natwar Singh, who served as the External Affairs Minister from 2004 to 2005 in the first UPA government of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, passed away on 10 August 2024. A former diplomat, Singh started his career as an Indian Foreign Service officer in 1953 and took early retirement in 1984 to enter politics as a Lok Sabha MP.
Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader Jitta Balakrishna Reddy passed away on 6 September 2024 at the age of 52.?
Reddy, who started his political activism as a youth leader of the TRS, gained prominence for his role in the Telangana statehood movement.
