If you are a sports fan, chances are high that you might have heard about volleyball. It is a popular team sport in which two teams of six players are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team's court under organized rules.

The history of the game dates back it's origins to 1895, when a physical education director William G. Morgan created a game called Mintonette, a name derived from the game of badminton, as a pastime to be played (preferably) indoors and by any number of players. The game took some of its characteristics from other sports such as tennis and handball.
At that time, newly created game of basketball, while popular with the kids, was proving to be too strenuous for the local businessmen. So, Morgan needed an alternative - something the older gentlemen could play - something without too much bumping or jolting.
After an observer, Alfred Halstead, noticed the volleying nature of the game at its first exhibition match in 1896, he suggested a two-word version of its present name "Volley Ball." And it stuck.?
The game of volleyball was quite a bit different from what we're used to. It was played on a smaller 25'x50' court, with an unlimited number of players hitting the ball an unlimited number of times, on either side of a 6'6" high net. Things tended to get a little crowded.

Since the game has been popular and there have been modifications and new rules implemented. The current rules state that each team has six players each, three staying in the front row and three at the back. Each team gets three hits to pass the ball in the opposition team's court and win the point. Also, points are made on every serve for wining team of rally.
The rules also state that a player can not hit the ball twice in succession, and also he can not catch, hold or throw the ball. If the ball lands on the boundary of the court, it is adjudged to be in.?
There can be a total of 12 substitutions, and a player that has been substituted may re-enter the game, but only in the position from which they were substituted.
Matches are made up of sets; the number depends on level of play. 3-set matches are 2 sets to 25 points and a third set to 15. Each set must be won by two points. The winner is the first team to win 2 sets. 5-set matches are 4 sets to 25 points and fifth set to 15. The team must win by 2 unless tournament rules dictate otherwise. The winner is the first team to win three sets.
An interesting set of rules, and ever more is the game.?
