It seems that the BCCI's decision to make it mandatory for all players to participate in domestic cricket has proven beneficial, but not necessarily for the cricketers. After the squad for the Champions Trophy 2025 was announced, the same players began their campaign in the ongoing Ranji Trophy, and so far, their performance has been disappointing.
The cricketers appeared to struggle against domestic stars, leading to trolling from fans, who are also concerned about the team's ability to perform against international players in the tournament set to begin from February 19.
Rohit Sharma, representing Mumbai, had a disappointing outing against Jammu and Kashmir, getting dismissed for just three runs off 19 balls. His teammate Yashasvi Jaiswal also struggled, managing only four runs off 8 balls, while Shreyas Iyer failed to make a significant impact, departing for 11 off 7 balls.?
In another match between Delhi and Saurashtra, Rishabh Pant endured a tough time with the bat, scoring just one run from 10 deliveries.?
Over in the clash between Punjab and Karnataka, Champions Trophy vice-captain and Punjab skipper Shubman Gill could muster only 4 runs off 8 balls. Adding to Punjab's woes, the entire team collapsed for a mere 55 runs in 29 overs.?
The performances of these players, who are set to represent India in the Champions Trophy in a few weeks, have not gone down well with fans. Many took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to express their frustration and disappointment.?
One fan commented, "Pant bhi flop hahaha... Jaiswal and Gill bhi... Ranji nahi ho paiga bhai isne... It is too low for these stars... BCCI has to understand this."
Another wrote, "Hope they regain some form before the Champions Trophy."?
One fan simply posted a heartbreak emoji alongside the caption, "Champions Trophy is coming."?
