Not many wrestlers have made more headlines in 2024 than Penta El Zero Miedo and Rey F¨¦nix, when it comes to jumping ship from one promotion to another. Throughout 2024, there have been rumours about the future of the Lucha Brothers in All Elite Wrestling (AEW).
Last month, Penta's contract with AEW expired, and since then WWE has dropped subtle hints about the luchador's impending debut.
Now, more details have emerged regarding the circumstances that led to the Lucha Brothers, who had been with AEW since its inception, leaving the promotion.
According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the Lucha Brothers were feeling that they had stagnated in AEW and knew WWE was interested in signing them.
Meltzer revealed that AEW President Tony Khan tried to retain the Lucha Brothers by offering them more lucrative contracts. This, however, failed to win over the brothers, who had already made up their minds to pack their bags.
Khan and other AEW higher-ups had reportedly reached out to Penta and F¨¦nix about discussing new deals, but they were told to take up any inquiries with their agent instead.
Realising that the Lucha Brothers were unlikely to re-sign, AEW then sidelined them from the shows since July. With the injury time added to their contracts, Penta and F¨¦nix's time with AEW, which was originally supposed to end in August and September, got extended till the end of November and early 2025.
Penta, whose AEW contract has already expired, is widely believed to have already signed with WWE, and F¨¦nix is expected to follow his brother soon.
