Right now, 5G is the biggest thing in connectivity technology. Of course, though the tech is here, the infrastructure isn't.
But that hasn't stopped the US president from demanding the next advance in data technology already, in a new Twitter rant.
Donald Trump posted to Twitter yesterday, with a very petulant, "I want 5G".
It's not clear just what triggered this particular set of tweets. As per usual, he probably saw news of the new Samsung Galaxy S10 5G on his favourite pro-Republican news shows, and realized there's no 5G network in the US to use it with.
Ultimately though, he seems to be parroting the same line once more, that American companies are falling behind the Chinese in manufacturing and technology. It ties in with his recent foreign economic policy after all.

Then again, he opines that he wants the US to "win through competition, not by blocking out currently more advanced technologies." Oddly enough, that's exactly what US government policy is doing with China at the moment.
Even stranger though are his demands for 6G, a network standard that's so deep into its infancy stage it technically doesn't even exist yet. Unfortunately for Trump though, that will take some time.
It'll be at least a few years more until the US properly adopts 5G and builds the necessary architecture for it. And after that, it'll be years more before the next advancement is designed, tested, and adopted in turn.
