Amazon's e-cargo bikes are now replacing thousands of delivery vans in London. What is Amazon trying to do? The company has also deputised a team of on-foot delivery staff to replace its large fleet of delivery vehicles in hopes of limiting emissions.
The company's first "micromobility" hub was recently opened in Hackney in East London. What will the vehicles change? According to the Guardian, the e-cargo bikes will complement Amazon's existing electric vehicle fleet. It will contribute to 5 million deliveries a year in London's low emission areas.
It appears that Amazon does not directly intend to operate the e-cargo bikes, but will instead allot business partners to do the same. "Amazon is driving towards a global net-zero carbon future. One way we¡¯re doing that is through the transformation of our transportation networks. Our new e-cargo bikes, walkers and growing electric vehicle delivery fleet will help us make more zero emission customer deliveries than ever before across London and the UK in the coming months," Amazon's UK manager John Boumphrey was quoted by The Guardian.
In India too, Amazon got into a partnership with Mahindra Electric in February, 2021 to start a delivery network of electric vehicles. When the deal was finalised, Amazon had deployed about a hundred Mahindra Treo Zor EVs in seven major Indian cities. The number could be higher now.?
