Apple had a bad weekend after it lost a patent infringement lawsuit where it was asked to pay over $300 million on Friday, alongside a $2 million fine levied by the Brazillian government for failing to include a charger in the box, among other concerns.?
The lawsuit was against Personalised Media Communications LLC where Apple was asked to pay around $308.5 million. The lawsuit was for infringing a patent associated with digital rights management.?
Reported first by Reuters, PMC had originally sued Apple in 2015 for infringing seven of its patents registered in the U.S. Patent Office, however, Apple had successfully challenged that lawsuit. But an appeal made in court in March last year eventually ended up reversing that decision.
Apple, in a statement with Bloomberg, revealed how it was disappointed with the lawsuit and how it harms and stifles innovation, "Cases like this, brought by companies that don't make or sell any products, stifle innovation and ultimately harm consumers."
This weekend, Apple received another blow, after regulators in the Brazilian state of S?o Paulo fined the Cupertino giant with an almost $2 million fine on Friday for not including chargers in the iPhone 12 boxes.
It is no secret that iPhone 12 shipped with no charger or headset in the box. While they claim it¡¯s for being ¡®environment friendly¡¯, everyone knows it¡¯s just a coy to earn more from its users.?
Reported first by 9to5mac, Procon-SP had asked Apple if the iPhone12¡¯s price would be reduced with the omission of the aforementioned accessories, to which Apple never responded.
Procon-SP has also accused Apple for refusing to repair devices that were claimed to be ¡®water resistant¡¯ and not helping customers who faced issues with some functions on their iPhones after iOS updates. They¡¯ve also stated that Apple¡¯s contract terms are too broad that protects the trillion-dollar company from responsibility even when it's their fault.
The agency¡¯s executive director, Fernando Capez said in a statement, ¡°Apple needs to understand that in Brazil there are solid consumer protection laws and institutions. It needs to respect these laws and these institutions.¡±?
