South Korean boy band BTS are loved worldwide, but their insane popularity has also made them a target for online hatred. Despite repeated warnings from their agency, Big Hit Entertainment, against spreading false rumors, some individuals continue to disseminate malicious content about the group. In a significant move to combat the same, the Seoul Western District Court has ruled in favor of BTS members V, aka Kim Taehyung, and Jungkook, ordering controversial YouTuber Park Sojang to pay a substantial fine for defaming the two idols.
On February 14, 2025, the court delivered its verdict, stating that Park, the owner of the YouTube channel "Taldeok Camp (Sojang)," must pay a total of 76 million KRW (approximately $53,000) for spreading harmful and defamatory content about V and Jungkook.
According to allkpop, the court stated, "The defendant?must pay Big Hit Music 51 million KRW (~$35,000), V 10 million KRW (~$7,000), and Jungkook 15 million KRW (~$10,000 USD)."?
This decision comes after Park was found guilty of posting false and damaging information about the two BTS members on his channel. The court acknowledged the significant harm caused by the defamation to the reputations of V and Jungkook, leading to the imposition of the financial penalty.
Big Hit Entertainment had previously taken legal action against Taldeok Camp, filing a defamation lawsuit in response to several YouTube videos that contained malicious content about? V and Jungkook. The lawsuit also alleged that the YouTube channel owner had used images and content featuring the BTS members without obtaining the necessary permission, infringing on their rights.
The YouTube videos in question were highly invasive in nature, making baseless claims about the personal lives, physical appearances, and relationships of the BTS members. Additionally, these videos often featured harmful and demeaning comments, which not only spread misinformation but also perpetuated a culture of hate and disrespect towards the celebrities.
Meanwhile, just last month, Park was sentenced to 2 years of probation and a hefty fine of 200 million KRW (approximately $139,000) after being found guilty of defaming IVE's Wonyoung by the Incheon District Court. However, Park has re-appealed for further reductions in the amount she was ordered to pay. Soloist Kang Daniel, another victim of her defamation, was awarded 30 million KRW in a case against her. She has reappealed Daniel's case as well.
