Artificial intelligence is the source of both allure and aversion for developers and users alike. While most acknowledge the restorative capabilities of AI in making the lives of humans easier through its capabilities in health care and medicine, others including Professor Stuart Russell from the University of California are wary of what might become of AI.?

Russell, who founded the Center for Human-Compatible Artificial Intelligence at UC Berkeley is convinced the artificial intelligence systems will outperform human intelligence within this century. In conversation with The Guardian, he also asserted the need to develop international treaties to regulate the fast-developing technology.
AI scientists are still adjusting "to the fact that" they're not beginning to have a "really big impact" in the physical world, Russell told The Guardian.?
The man who wrote a canonical book on artificial intelligence feels that the tech is developing at an impressive rate, forcing scientists to keep playing catch-up with their own creations.

No, artificial intelligence isn't only about making machines sentient. The key software that supports our search engines like Google and Bing along with banking services are all based on artificial intelligence. The automation of such processes has eliminated the scope of human error and fraud.
The co-author of 'Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach,' Russell warned about urging AI to make sweeping changes, for instance, curing cancer. He said that this demand might make AI induce tumours in the "whole human population" to find ways to cure us.?
Essentially, Russell is warning about using AI to find sweeping solutions without including all variables. For every command allotted to an AI, every potential variable needs to be considered, including potential harm to humans.

While Russell cannot be sure of when AI would trespass, or at least match human intelligence, his estimate is between 10 years to a few hundred years, with most gains expected to be made within this century.
