Amid calls for a halt on the development of artificial intelligence tools by the likes of Tesla's Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Microsoft's founder Bill Gates has said that pausing AI development will not solve the challenges ahead.
Instead of supporting a six-month ban on artificial intelligence technologies like other technologists, Bill Gates said that it was better to understand how to optimally employ the developments in AI, adding that it would be difficult to make a pause work globally.
In conversation with Reuters, Gates said "asking one particular group to pause solves the challenges," probably referring to ChatGPT's maker OpenAI - the focus of the open letter signed by more than 1,000 experts.
Gates said that there are "huge benefits" to AI if we identify the "tricky areas." It's important to note that Microsoft has poured a lot of money into OpenAI and has also integrated its capabilities into the Bing search engine along with its Office suite.

Even then, Gates has been supportive of AI for quite some time now, comparing its capabilities as revolutionary and disruptive as the internet and mobile phones. In a blog titled "The Age of AI has begun" from March 21, Gates said that AI should be used to help reduce the world's worst inequities.

Besides eating through workforces throughout various industries, many technologists are worried about the ethical problems with AI tools like ChatGPT. In addition, there is a lack of regulation that could land AI chatbots like ChatGPT in murky waters. Just recently, an AI tool reportedly encouraged a user to take his own life.
In addition, people in creative industries like writing and art are worried about the long-term impact of such AI tools on their professions.
