It seems like electric vehicles (EVs) are literally reaching new heights now. We say this because of the recent Guinness World Record set by a Chinese electric car. What did it do? Well, the vehicle reached the highest altitude ever by an electric car, at a height of 18,751 feet.
The feat was achieved by Chinese auto maker Nio¡¯s all-electric sport utility vehicle, the Nio ES8. The car was able to reach the Purog Kangri glacier in Tibet, considered to be the world¡¯s third largest, standing at a height of 5,715.28 m.
While achieving this height, the electric SUV was being driven by driver Chen Haiyi. The objective was to showcase the reliability and the car¡¯s battery¡¯s capability to withstand extremely low temperatures.

The record holds special significance in these times as many parts of the US experience sub-zero temperatures due to polar vortex. This has resulted in many of the electric cars in the region losing their full battery capacity, leading to a reduced range of the EVs.
In comparison, the Nio ES8¡¯s record climb was made in a temperature of 23 degree Fahrenheit, according to Guinness. The record attempt was carried out on September 24 last year.

What¡¯s more, the company also studied the feasibility of installing charging stations on the way up, aiming to make trips to Tibet a possibility for electric car owners.
Interestingly, another Nio ES8 gained headlights this week as a man put his NS8 on an update in the middle of a traffic jam in Beijing. This resulted in the man being stranded in the traffic for more than an hour, unable to even roll down the windows of the car during the update.?
