Who set the record for the highest ski-BASE jumping off a Himalayan mountain??
?Joshua Bregmen, 34, skied from a cliff on Mera Peak in Nepal and parachuted to the earth, breaking the previous record by more than 4,000 feet. Matthias Giraud (France) formerly held the record for the highest ski-BASE jump in history, jumping from 14,301 feet in 2019.
How did the man prepare for his record-making feat??
For his attempt, the daredevil spent two weeks on Mera Peak, hiking and skiing to the jumping site, camping to acclimate to the high-altitude Himalayas, and even clearing debris from the course.
"We all worked so hard, and the lack of oxygen, constant headaches and sleeping at around 6,000 m added to the body degrading. One of the guys even said this was harder than when he climbed Everest," Bregmen recalled.
When the team initially arrived at a prospective jump place, they were almost ready to return the following year since, as he put it, "it was just a big rocky slope."
When did the team discover the right slope??
They didn't discover the right slope until the next day, and even then, they had to clear stones and bring in snow to make a piste.
"That night we were blessed with a 2 cm dusting of snow - not much, but it helped," says Bregmen.
"The plan was to perform several great S-turns and ski elegantly down the cliff, but in fact, we only had a lowly rock-filled runway at an exit height of over 6,000.?Bregman was able to safely finish the prank, which he organized to raise awareness about Nepal's human-trafficking epidemic and provide financial assistance to thousands of child victims.?
Surprisingly, it was a self-funded effort with no sponsors, borrowed equipment, and secondhand skis.
