With COVID-19 completely taking over our world, researchers are working on ways to make our post-COVID-19 life better -- either by developing vaccines to save our body from it or ways of disinfecting to prevent it from spreading further.?
Last week, we saw?the Indian army develop a cool robot wagon?that could allow delivery of essential items in isolation wards and prevent contraction of the novel coronavirus.? ?
And now, India¡¯s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed a UV disinfection tower that is designed to disinfect high-infection-prone surfaces without the need for any chemicals.
The tower is called UV Blaster, and it is helpful for disinfecting surfaces that cannot be cleaned with liquid solutions/ chemicals such as electronic gear in laboratories, computers, etc.?
Similar to what an air-purifier does in a closed space, the UV Blaster will prove beneficial for office spaces, airports or malls where one sees a large frequency of people, preventing them all from contracting and spreading the novel coronavirus by emitting healthy UV radiation.?
The device looks nothing like you¡¯ve seen before. It¡¯s a long structure with six UV lamps placed vertically in a circular pattern. Each one of the six UV lamps features 43 watts of UV-C power at 254nm wavelength. Its design allows for the disinfection of germs to happen on all sides, in a 360-degree fashion.
The device is around 12x12 feet in dimension and it takes around 10 to 30 minutes for the disinfection process to completely cleanse a 400 square kilometre area. The idea is to install several of these indoors to keep the areas clean. The device is smart and can be controlled remotely using the Wi-Fi network.?
This UV tower has been developed by Laser Science and Technology Centre (LASTEC), the Delhi-based laboratory of DRDO in collaboration with M.s New Age Instruments and Materials Private Ltd.
