Google's Nearby Share feature is being rolled out to Windows PC, making exchange of files easier. Currently, Nearby Share is available on Android smartphones and Chromebooks - and now on Windows PC in beta. The feature is Android's answer to Apple's Airdrop and makes file-sharing quick.
"Nearby Share Beta works with your Windows PC whether the app is open on the desktop or running in the background. Sending a photo, video or document from your PC to a nearby Android device is as easy as dragging and dropping it into the app, or by selecting ¡®Send with Nearby Share' in the right-click menu. Just select which Android devices you want to share with from the list that pops up," a Google blog post said.
Currently, Nearby Share app for Windows may be downloaded from the Android website, and supports Windows computers running a 64-bit version of Windows 10 and up; and requires Bluetooth and WiFi.
Just like on Android, Nearby Share on Windows allows users to send and receive files from everyone, their contacts, their own devices, or no one. It also has the option to appear visible to all contacts or stay hidden.

The Nearby Share option on Android is available from the get-go and no extra installation is needed if you have a device running Android 6 and above, although some steps might work differently if you're not on Android 13. On Windows, you need to install the app from the Android website then sign in to your Google account. Once done, you can share files and entire folders across your Windows and Android device - making the entire process much easier than using wires or sending emails to yourself.
For Nearby Share to work, the devices need to be within 5 metres (16 feet) of each other. Just like Airdrop, Nearby Share allows you to share files with anyone on an Android phone (and now Windows PC) who has the feature turned on and made their device discoverable.
