India's intends to join the European Union in enforcing USB Type-C as the uniform charging port for all smartphones, tablets, and laptops in the market.
These changes might come into effect as soon as 2024 in India. The primary rationale behind a move like this is to cut down on e-waste produced by companies with differing charging ports - in this case, mostly Apple.
A mandatory Type-C port will also allow users to use a single cable for all those devices, cutting down clutter for personal use. On Wednesday, a Central Inter-Ministerial Task Force reached a consensus on standardising USB Type-C charging port on all electronic devices.
This rollout is expected to take place in a standardised manner and will affect smartphones, tablets, and laptops. The Department of Consumer Affairs is also assessing the scope of standardising USB Type-C for wearables and smartwatches. Feature phones, too, could be considered for a mandatory switch.
These changes might come into effect in India after the European Union enforces a similar law. The change will adversely affect Apple, a company that has stuck with its Lightning ports since 2012.

The USB Type-C is also able to deliver faster speeds than Lightning connectors thanks to USB 3.1, USB 4, and Thunderbolt support. Lightning runs on USB 2.0, a slower and outdated version of this tech.
It appears that Apple might drop the Lightning connecter as soon as next year when the iPhone 15 series is expected to launch.
