Facebook-owned Instagram chief Adam Mosseri kicked up quite the storm online after a tone-deaf statement about the future of social media.?
Social-media-is-like-cars-and-people-will-die, Mosseri suggested on the Recode Media podcast after Instagram was taunted online for recent leaks which showed the company's high level of awareness about what its products do to teenagers, especially girls.?
On the podcast with Peter Kafka, Mosseri essentially compared the demerits of social media and Instagram with cars, suggesting that some people will get hurt no matter what they do.A false equivalence, Mosseri seems to think that using a smartphone device is akin to being on the road where there are countless risks.?
The crux of his argument lies in the value embedded into cars, which remains unchanged in the face of its disadvantages and the risks that people face while operating cars.?

"We know that more people die than would otherwise because of car accidents, but by and large cars create way more value in the world than they destroy... And I think social media is similar", TechCrunch quoted Mosseri as saying during the podcast.?
He was immediately rebuffed by Kafka who rightly pointed out how automobiles undergo rigorous evaluation and regulation globally. To this, Mosseri said that regulation can cause "more problems".?
Recent leaks by the Wall Street Journal revealed the true extent of Facebook and Instagram's knowledge about the harm it does to its minor users. The leaks openly claimed that Instagram makes body issues worse for one in three teenage girls, quoting an internal slide.?
