India wants to build a new reusable rocket for the government market, Department of Space Secretary and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman S Somanath announced on Monday at the Bengaluru Space Expo (BSX) 2022.
Reusable rockets are being touted as the future of space exploration, and they also reduce the cost of launching satellites into space in the long run. In fact, ISRO's next launch could be a reusable rocket.
According to news agency PTI, Somanath said that the new reusable rocket will be designed and built soon. Currently, it costs between Rs. 7,97,800-11,96,800 ($10,000-15,000) to put a single kilogram of payload into Earth's orbit.

Somanath said that ISRO wants to reduce it to Rs. 3,98,000 ($5,000) or even Rs. 79,700 ($1,000) per kilogram by making the rocket reusable. Currently, India doesn't have reusable technology in the launch vehicles sector. "I would like to see this [proposal] taking shape in the next few months," Somanath said.
Currently, India's space organisation ISRO is working on a host of technologies including the Inflatable Aerodynamic Decelerator (IAD). Somanath hopes that the agency would be able to combine various technologies to deliver future-ready results.
