The Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP) located in Tamil Nadu faced a cyberattack by North Korea's Lazarus. The attack hasn't really affected the control of the reactor, but the hackers managed to steal confidential research data.

The breach has been confirmed by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. (NPCIL). It said in a statement, "Identification of malware in NPCIL system is correct. The matter was conveyed by CERT-In when it was noticed by them on September 4, 2019. The matter was immediately investigated by DAE specialists."
As per the investigation, it was discovered that the infected PC was owned by someone who was connected to the internet-connected network used for administrative purposes.
The statement further added, "This is isolated from the critical internal network. The networks are being continuously monitored. The investigation also confirms that the plant systems are not affected,"
A statement on Tuesday by KKNPP revealed that the control systems atomic plants in the country are stand-alone and not connected to the internet. However, it was in this statement that they had completely disregarded that a breach had occurred.
The breach was first spotted by Pukhraj Singh -- a former security analyst for India's National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO). He discovered it first on VirusTotal -- a virus tracking website. The site suggested people behind this belonged to Lazarus -- the North Korea based hacker group.?

The KKNPP is India's largest nuclear facility. And since its inception, it has surrounded numerous controversies. From the delay of its activation for nearly ten years by protests from local fishermen and activists to the running of only two out of six reactors due to numerous safety issues. The facility has been shut down over 70 times since it began its operations in 2013.?
