Being a "robot lawyer" cannot be easy. DoNotPay describes itself as the "world's first robot lawyer" and has now been accused of practicing law without a licence. DoNotPay is now facing a proposed class action lawsuit that was filed by a Chicago-based law firm Edelson on March 3.
"Unfortunately for its customers, DoNotPay is not actually a robot, a lawyer, nor a law firm. DoNotPay does not have a law degree, is not barred in any jurisdiction, and is not supervised by any lawyer," the complaint said.
The lawsuit, as Business Insider reported, was filed on behalf of Jonathan Faridian, who apparently used DoNotPay to write a series of legal documents like demand letters, a small claims court filing, and a job discrimination complaint.
Faridian alleges in the complaint that he was under the impression that the legal documents were sourced from a "lawyer that was competent to provide them" but only received "substandard" results.

DoNotPay, founded in 2015 as an app to help customers dispute parking tickets, can now use artificial intelligence to assist customers in many legal services without hiring a lawyer. According to its website, DoNotPay can help customers fight corporations, find hidden money, and "sue anyone."
On Twitter, DoNotPay's CEO Joshua Browder said that these lacked any merit and promised to fight the lawsuit, adding that DoNotPay was "not going to be bullied by America's richest class action lawyer."

Earlier this year, DoNotPay said that it was planning to use artificial intelligence to advise people facing a traffic court. This was, of course, postponed after he allegedly received "threats from State Bar prosecutors."
