Microsoft recently became the first Big Tech company to embrace easy repairs for its users. The US-based technology giant's decision to offer flexibility to users in terms of repairs marks a landmark victory for the Right-To-Repair Movement.
Most companies including Apple, Google and until recently, Microsoft exercised a monopoly over repairs, forcing customers to repair their devices at authorised shops. Most parts are only available with authorised repair centres, limiting user access to repair options.
In addition, companies limit the information they share with users about potential repairs and prioritise in-house repairing over third party repairs.?
In June 2021, "As You Sow", an advocacy group had urged Microsoft to examine how removing this repair barrier would have "environmental and social benefits" while also offering flexibility to users.
On Thursday, Grist reported that Microsoft had agreed to investor requests to allow third party repairs for its devices. Reportedly, Microsoft is set to appoint a consultant to assess how offering more access to parts to all would help in limiting electronic waste and environmental damage.

Microsoft has pledged to begin acting on the findings of this yet-to-be-made assessment by the end of 2022.
If this works out as anticipated, it could set a precedent for many technology companies like Apple that disallow users from repairing their own devices. In India's case, local stores that offer repairs at low prices are discouraged from being sought.
