Mozilla Is Offering $2 Million To Anyone Who Can Decentralise The Internet

Following the plot of the hit TV series ‘The Silicon Valley’, where Richard Hendricks, the CEO of Pied Piper put forwards a plan for ‘decentralising’ the internet, Mozilla, the maker of Firefox has come up with the same idea that won’t break the internet alone, but would create a new one.

Mozilla is offering $2 million to anybody who comes up with an idea of new solutions and utilising the existing ones to help people enjoy a better connectivity.
Mozilla along with National Science Foundation are calling for ideas that would decentralise the net. The internet initially was a decentralised property, however today it only reaches some and not to many, majority of a population. And thus to make it affordable for one and all, the ideas are welcomed by the both organisations.

The participants would go through two challenges –
a) Off the grid internet challenge – In this challenge, the participants are expected to make a wireless network and applications provided on top of that network. For instance – Something like a backpack containing a hard drive computer, battery and Wi-Fi router can be made to win the competition.
b) Smart community network challenge – This challenge is about making a neighbourhood wireless network that would draw power from disused phone booths and old infrastructure.
