OnePlus finally launched its newest flagship smartphone, the OnePlus 5T last night, which replaces the popular five-month old OnePlus 5.
And while all the existing OnePlus 5 users are in a state of sadness and rage, the OnePlus 5T isn¡¯t very different. Here¡¯s what¡¯s new and what¡¯s the same with the OnePlus 5T.
OnePlus 5T has once again tried to imitate Apple. This time it has adopted the face unlock feature from the iPhone X. And while it might not have the hardware that the iPhone X is loaded with, it surely is quite snappy to react to. OnePlus 5 comes with just a fingerprint scanner to unlock the device, making the OnePlus 5T far more tempting for the fans.
One of the major changes that the OnePlus 5T comes with is the display. The device features a large 6-inch ultra-wide full-HD panel with a resolution of 2560x1080. The OnePlus 5, on the other hand, is rocking a 5.5-inch full-HD panel with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. The newer display is not only sharper and wider, but it also sports thinner bezels than the OnePlus 5, adding a good sprinkle of the ¡®wow¡¯ factor. This is an upgrade the existing OnePlus 5 users would crave for.
On first glance, the design of the smartphone looks awfully identical with the beautifully curving body. It looks like a longer OnePlus 5. However, closer inspection will reveal a few crucial changes. For starters, due to the display getting wider, the fingerprint scanner is now at the back of the phone. OnePlus 5 had its fingerprint scanner at the chin of the device. The device has also lost the off-screen touch capacitive buttons, and now the navigation relies completely on the on-screen buttons, which will indirectly eat up some of your screen space.
This is one place where OnePlus 5T remains identical to the OnePlus 5. OnePlus 5 was a mean performer, and OnePlus 5T won¡¯t be any different. It retains the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset along with Adreno 540 GPU. The device is also keeping its variants intact, with 6GB RAM/64GB storage and 8GB RAM/128GB storage options.
This is another place where the OnePlus 5 has gone ahead and gotten a major change. OnePlus 5 had an amazing camera setup with dual 16-megapixel sensors where one was a wide angle lens with f/1.7 aperture, and the second was a telephoto zoom lens with f/2.4 aperture.
The OnePlus 5T, on the other hand, is focusing more on low-light performance while retaining the dual-camera goodness from its predecessor. The OnePlus 5T is rocking a pair of 16-megapixel and 20-megapixel sensors where both will sport a focal length of 27mm and aperture of f/1.7. With both the lenses getting a wider aperture, the translation hints at a better low-light performance. We will have to test the camera out to get to a final conclusion, but from the looks of it, the specs do feel promising.
The operating system is another place where OnePlus didn't decide on doing something fancy with the 5T. OnePlus 5T is running on the dated Android 7.1.1 Nougat, same as the OnePlus 5. OnePlus has promised for an Oreo update in the Q1 of 2018.?
OnePlus 5 is known for its impressive battery life, but that won¡¯t really be the case with the 5T.? OnePlus 5T retains the same 3300mAh battery as the OnePlus 5. With a bigger screen with higher resolution, the device will suck more battery than the full-HD display on the OnePlus 5, which could translate to slightly disappointing battery performance. However, the smartphone also retains OnePlus¡¯s instantaneous Dash Charging, so it won¡¯t take forever to juice up your OnePlus 5T.
This is another place where OnePlus 5 and 5T aren¡¯t very different and would definitely irritate existing OnePlus 5 users. Both the OnePlus 5 and 5T retains a similar price tag of Rs 32,999 for the 6GB RAM/64GB storage variant, and Rs 37,999 for the 8GB RAM/128GB storage variant.
