With the Cambridge Analytica scandal, a lot of previously oblivious Facebook have now had their eyes opened to how their data is used, and how companies manipulate it to serve ads. Because of that, a lot of people want to opt out and do away with ads. Unfortunately, that may not be an option.
In an interview with the Today Show on NBC News, Facebook¡¯s Chief Operating Officer mentioned that any possibility of doing away with ads in your experience would involve spending some moolah.
It¡¯s a fair statement, given that ads are Facebook¡¯s only revenue stream. They released a product that¡¯s universally free to use and access, so they have to make that money somehow. Unfortunately, what the company didn¡¯t do was live up to its responsibility to safeguard that user data. After all, when your customers are the product you make money off, you have to make sure they stay protected. If your income source was a herd of sheep you wouldn¡¯t abandon them to wolves would you?

¡°We were very focused on social experiences, and [were] pretty idealistic,¡± Sandberg admitted in the interview. We believed in a world where people could share and experience things together, and we just weren¡¯t thinking enough about the bad use cases. That¡¯s on us, we are learning those lessons.¡±
The company has been receiving some serious flak over the fact that data-mining firm Cambridge Analytica harvested the personal data of about 87 million users, over 560,000 of whom are Indians.
