Popular fitness band maker Fitbit has released a report on the sleep quality of its users. The data was collected from people using its fitness bands across 17 countries. The report revealed that Indians are the second most sleep-deprived among these countries, with Japan topping the list.
Fitbit has got its hands on data from 10.5 billion nights of sleep. The data was collected for a year, from August 1st 2018 to July 21, 2019. According to the data, Indian Fitbit users only sleep for 7 hours and 1 minute every night. The most sleep-deprived being Japan where a user would only sleep for 6 hours and 47 minutes. Users from Ireland were the ones with the most amount of sleep, coming at 7 hours 57 minutes.
What's worse is the fact that users from India and Japan get just 77 minutes of REM sleep on average which is the lowest in the world. REM or Rapid Eye Movement sleep is an important element for emotion regulation, memory health, as well as managing peak stage of protein synthesis at the cellular level, which ensures that multiple processes in the body function properly.?
The study also revealed that Indians spend 57 minutes awake on an average each night they sleep, which is around 13.5 percent of their daily night sleep.

Fitbit also shared the fact that India has the least active users. As per the report, Indians walk only 6533 steps daily, which is 3600 steps lesser than the average of the most active country -- Hong Kong, as well as the least among all 18 countries.?
While this report is alarming, it is also worth noting that the report is only based on people using the Fitbit fitness bands and the same cannot generalised for everyone in India.
