Tesla CEO Elon Musk has revealed that Tesla cars are now capable of navigating through intricate parking lots on their own to reach their owners.
On Tuesday, Musk took to social media platform X to announce, ¡°Your Tesla can now drive itself through complex parking lots to find you.¡± His comment was in response to a post from ¦«I DRIVR, which praised the improved ¡°Actually Smart Summon¡± feature, noting that it now makes navigating crowded places like Costco more convenient.
Tesla¡¯s Summon and Smart Summon functions enable vehicles to move in and out of parking spaces autonomously over distances of up to 12 meters (around 39 feet). These features have been created to work best in familiar and relatively controlled environments such as private parking areas or residential driveways.
Smart Summon is designed to guide the car to a designated location or to its owner directly, avoiding obstacles and stopping when necessary. Tesla highlights that this feature is intended for use in private parking lots and driveways rather than on public roads.
Musk¡¯s announcement represents an important step in Tesla¡¯s ongoing work to develop autonomous driving technology. The rollout of the ¡°Actually Smart Summon¡± feature, which allows users to summon their vehicles using just their phones, marks another milestone in Tesla¡¯s Full Self-Driving (FSD) capabilities.
This development follows the company¡¯s rebranding of the FSD package earlier this year, which was renamed ¡°Full Self-Driving (Supervised).¡± The new branding reflects the fact that while the car is highly autonomous, some driver oversight is still required. This shift has fueled discussions and even some conspiracy theories within the Tesla owner community.
?Just a day before this announcement, Musk also commented on Tesla¡¯s plans for robotaxis, stating that buses could become obsolete once these autonomous vehicles are operational. He suggested that Tesla¡¯s robotaxis could offer door-to-door service at prices similar to public transit, hinting at the transformative potential of the company¡¯s technology in the transportation sector.
