Researchers have created a robot that can do your laundry and clean your home. The robot was created by researchers from different universities, namely Princeton and Colombia. According to them, it is perfect for everyday cleaning. Called "TidyBot," it is able to effectively pick up items from the floor and place them where they belong based on specific commands, the research team's paper stated.
TidyBot's creators first created a "text-based benchmark dataset" that had certain commands. Then, GPT-3 was asked to follow these instructions. Various commands included "yellow shirts go in the drawer, dark shirts go in the closets" and so on. These examples were summarised by GPT-3, a large language model (LLM), in the following way - "light-coloured clothes go in the drawer and dark-coloured clothes go in the closet." Fascinating, right?
In different rooms, the robot was put through 24 scenarios. In each of these, two to five potential places for objects to be placed were shown. To get a better idea of the software's memorisation skills, objects were described as seen or unseen.
Eventually, the researchers concluded that LLMs make a "good match" for the "generalised requirements" of personal robots. Essentially, it was able to follow commands and perform tasks as expected, with an "accuracy of 91.2 percent on unseen objects throughout all scenarios."

In real-world test scenarios, the TidyBot was able to "successfully put away 85% of objects." According to the paper, before TidyBot starts cleaning, users have to "provide a handful of example placements for specific objects." Based on these, the LLM would summarise these tasks.?Then, "the robot will then carry out the cleanup task by repeatedly picking up objects, identifying them, and moving them to their target."

While TidyBot's website shows that the robot can effectively sort through clothes on the floor and then put them in laundry bins and also sort out trash before putting it into garbage bins, there's still work to be done for TidyBot to be able to cater to everyone's needs.
